A classic car doesn’t fail all at once. It fails slowly, in a building that seemed fine.
The paint looks the same in April as it did in October. What changed is underneath — a perished seal, a flat-spotted tire, a fuel line that’s gone brittle, surface rust starting where road salt sat in a wheel well for five months. None of it is dramatic. All of it is expensive.
That’s the difference between storing a modern car and storing an older one, and it’s the thing worth asking a storage provider about.
What Actually Goes Wrong Over a Winter
Rubber goes first. Tires, door seals, bushings, weatherstripping, hoses. Rubber hardens and cracks with cold, and older compounds are less forgiving than modern ones. A car that sits in an unheated building through a Michigan January comes out with rubber that’s aged more than five months’ worth.
Moisture is the quiet one. A cold building with poor air movement gets condensation. Condensation on bare metal is how surface rust starts, and on a classic that’s often in places you won’t see until it’s established.
Fuel separates. Modern gasoline with ethanol doesn’t sit well. Five months in a half-empty tank gives you condensation above the fuel line and phase separation below it.
Tires flat-spot. Any car parked for months develops them. Older tires with stiffer sidewalls hold the shape longer.
None of this requires an exotic facility to prevent. It requires a building that’s heated, dry and clean, and someone who understands what they’re looking at.
Questions Worth Asking Any Provider
Is the building heated through winter, or just indoors? These are not the same thing. An unheated warehouse keeps rain off your car and does very little else. Ask directly.
Can I see it? Not photos. The actual space, with cars in it. Anyone confident in their storage will show you. Hesitation tells you something.
What happens if I need the car out in February? Some providers allow it, some don’t, some charge. There’s no wrong answer, but you should know before you sign rather than after.
Who else has keys, and who moves the cars? In any storage building, cars occasionally need moving to reach others. Ask how that’s handled and whether it’s documented.
What’s included and what’s extra? Battery tending, a wash before you collect it, access outside office hours. These vary enormously between facilities at similar prices.
Is the floor clean? It sounds cosmetic. It isn’t. A clean floor is how you notice a fluid leak in November instead of discovering it in April.
How We Handle It
We store cars on Schoolcraft Road in Livonia, in a 1950s masonry building. Thick walls and a slab floor give it real thermal mass, so it stays naturally cool through summer instead of fighting the heat. Through winter we heat it — which is the part that matters for rubber.
Every storage package includes a battery tender. Winter storage includes a handwash and vacuum both when the car arrives and again before you collect it, so it goes in clean and comes out clean.
If a car needs moving to reach another, that’s normal in any storage building. We’ll tell you if it happens.
The building is monitored by a professional alarm company with camera coverage, and access is controlled.
Storage Options & Pricing
- Winter Storage: $2,000 for up to six months, roughly October 15 through April 15. A $250 deposit reserves the space and the balance is due October 1. There are no in-and-out privileges on this package — if you want the car out before April 1, it’s $199 per trip, which includes a handwash and vacuum on return.
- Year Round Storage: $350 a month if you’d rather keep the car available through the year.
- Full Service Storage: $400 a month if you want in-and-out privileges and up to a weekly wash.
One thing worth saying plainly: we don’t insure your car. Our coverage protects the building and our operations. Your own policy needs to stay active, and that’s true of any storage facility — some are just less direct about it.
